First Light Flashback

Service Description:

Join us for this special performance of native history and culture by Annawon Weeden. Weeden explains that “Wampanoag means ‘People of the First Light’ due to our geographic location as the furthest eastern tribe,” and “First Light Flashback” explores the narrative and experience of the local native peoples over the past 400 years.

First Light Flashback will also be performed Saturday March 26, 2:30pm at the Stoughton Public Library. Please visit to pre-register for the Saturday presentation. No pre-registration required for Sunday

Speaker Bio:

Annawon Weeden is a member of his mother’s Mashpee Wampanoag tribal community on Cape Cod. He currently works in the Cultural Resource Department as the Eastern Woodland song and dance instructor for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal community in southeastern Connecticut.  Annawon has been instructed in the traditional dances and customs of New England natives. Following in his father’s footsteps, he began sharing the culture of his tribes with his family during public programs and performances at a young age. As an adult, Annawon’s passion for preserving the culture has been expressed through decades spent working at Plimouth Patuxet Museums as a museum interpreter and educator and at the Boston Children’s Museum as a Native program specialist.
Through his performance of First Light Flashback, Annewon looks forward to sharing his knowledge while engaging in cultural preservation for future generations of better understanding.
