Service Description:
“Thoughts on Easter” – Rev. Christopher McMahon
Easter is considered by Christians the most important religious holiday because of the death of Jesus and the belief in his resurrection. Similar to other religious holidays that borrow from other religious traditions, Easter is no exception. The name “Easter” is derived from the pagan goddess “Eoster” who was a goddess celebrated with the coming of spring. The tradition of finding Easter eggs is also pagan and early Christian; and, of course, the date of Jesus’ death was during the springtime festival of the Jewish Passover. But looking in from the outside, can we still celebrate the life of Jesus and mark the time of his death with respect and even admiration?
